Since our initial Age-Friendly Conference in October 2015, 11 community-based initiatives across 14 northern New Jersey towns have launched! Communities in NJ join an international movement in which residents envision and then collaboratively work to implement the social and physical infrastructure changes that promote successful aging - which is everyone’s right! Where we live and how we get around in our communities are extremely important factors in our longevity, independence, and resilience in emergencies.
Now, in response to the current pandemic crisis, age-friendly community leaders and partners are well-positioned to help their towns respond quickly, and effectively. The relevance of age-friendly efforts has never been more pronounced.
We have learned throughout this process that deliberate collaboration among public and private community organizations and residents is key to the success of age-friendly initiatives. This coordinated approach leads to the implementation of programs and policies that support healthy aging, better access to services, and safer public spaces. Planning communities through an aging-friendly lens marks a monumental shift for our state, and the benefits for older adults and people of all ages are considerable. Thank you for joining us to hear about these benefits, and their accompanying challenges, during the four days of the conference.
In hosting this virtual conference, we are privileged to bring you a wide range of national experts participating from five states, as well as more than 25 dedicated and experienced coordinators from our NJ network of age-friendly communities. We thank our grantees, partners, and valued colleagues for sharing your knowledge, your energy, and your collaborative spirit. We commend your accomplishments in advancing the age-friendly movement!
Special thanks to the Board of Trustees of The Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation and to Grotta Fund council members for giving us the opportunity to explore and develop this initiative. You opened the path for partnerships and activated a network that has grown in ways we could not imagine four years ago.
We hope those of you attending the conference with us will become engaged in your own communities’ aging-friendly efforts and then utilize your strengths and passion to make your town a great place for every resident for their entire lifespan!
